THE projected trilogy between Alex Eala and Iga Swiatek will have to wait.
World No. 3 Swiatek crashed out of the Miami Open after a 6-1, 5-7, 3-6 loss to fellow Polish Magda Linette, who flipped the match after dropping the opening set to book a Round of 32 clash with Eala.
Linette, currently ranked No. 50, advances as the highest-ranked remaining Polish player in that section of the draw, taking over what was supposed to be Swiatek’s path.

From her end, the world No. 29 Eala is coming off one of her grittier wins this season, outlasting Laura Siegemund, 6(6)-7, 6-3, 6-3, in a match that stretched over three hours.
The upcoming meeting will be the fourth between Eala and Linette, with the veteran holding a 2-1 edge.
Linette took their first two encounters in Abu Dhabi Open in 2024 and in Nottingham in 2025, both times using her experience and consistency to blunt Eala’s baseline game.
Eala, however, broke through in their most recent clash at the ASB Classic in January, delivering a composed 6-3, 6-2 win that showcased improved technique against Linette.
Since that meeting, both players have taken different trajectories on tour. Linette has hovered around the Top 50, leaning on her experience in longer rallies, while Eala has surged to a career-high No. 29, highlighted by her first WTA 125 title in Guadalajara and deeper runs at tour-level events.
With Swiatek out, the draw opens slightly, but the matchup remains tricky.
Linette’s ability to absorb pace and extend rallies presents a familiar challenge, while Eala will look to dictate early and build on the confidence from their Auckland result.
Their Round of 32 encounter is set for March 21, with the exact match time still to be announced.
