NATIONAL University (NU) kept its hopes alive for a title sweep of UAAP Season 76 tennis tournament by beating defending champion De La Salle, 3-1, Wednesday at the Olivarez Tennis Center in Paranaque City.
Top seed Hanna Grace Espinosa, who was forced to retire due to cramps in Game One, exacted revenge against Rachelle De Guzman, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, to open up the day’s play with a victory for the top-seeded Lady Bulldogs.
In doubles, Kimberly Uytico and Junnalyn Polito came back from a set down to beat Nikkirey Arandia and Anne Rene Castillo, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, before the sophomore duo of Anna Vienna Bienes and Marie Gold Nagret routed Pauline Denise Cacapit and Lynette Palasan, 6-0, 6-0, to complete the series-tying win for NU.
De La Salle got a consolation of sort as NU head coach Karl Santamaria decided to pull out Christine Patrimonio in the second singles against Regina Santiago to keep the Lady Bulldog in top shape for Game 3.
Patrimonio won the first set 7-6 (9-7).
The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Archers square off for the clincher in Game Three on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. also at the Olivarez tennis courts.
