IT could have been possible tennis great John McEnroe ended up battling Serena Williams, had the money at stake been at par with what Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather earned from their megaflop.
McEnroe, in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time), recalled Donald Trump had offered some money for McEnroe and Williams to play years ago, but said it just wouldn’t happen.
“He made an offer which I think is not enough, and I think he was humoring the two of us,” said McEnroe.
The seven-time grand slam singles champion, now 56, said he believes he can still take on Williams and win, but noted how much was at stake for both of them if they played.
“I believe that I could still take her.”
“Serena… she's got a lot to lose by losing to an old fart like myself.
“And I got a lot to lose, because if I lose to, God forbid, a woman, then I'm not allowed in any men's locker room for the next 15 years, or possibly the end of my life.”
Then the American tennis superstar left an opening.
“… If they paid the type of money that (Manny) Pacquiao and what’s that other guy got, I mean,” McEnroe said before being cut off.
