THE International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) and TV5 have inked a deal for the live broadcast of the second season of the unique tournament, including the Manila leg on December 6-8 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
TV5, through Mediaquest president and chief executive officer Emmanuel Lorenzana, welcomed the addition of a new sports brand in its lineup in a contract signing that was also attended by IPTL founder Mahesh Bhupathi and Sports5 head Chot Reyes.
“In terms of ability to cover sports events, I think we have proven our ability and we’ve been doing a great job of bringing sports to the public. What better way to do it than to add another sports event to our lineup which is tennis,” said Lorenzana.
Five teams including the home squad Philippine Mavericks will be competing in the first installment of the IPTL. Under tournament regulations, each team plays a single-set men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and past champions’ singles matches with the winner decided by the most number of cumulative games won.
“We like the IPTL because the matches are such that we know that they’ll going to go forever. The format is such that it is very friendly for TV,” Reyes said.
The Mavericks will be led by women’s world number one Serena Williams, Fil-American doubles specialist Treat Huey, Richard Gasquet, Jarmila Gajdosova, Milos Raonic, Sabine Lisicki, and Mark Philippoussis.
They will play against the Indian Aces, Singapore Slammers, UAE Royals, and new team Japan Warriors.
Lorenzana believes that the IPTL will be a welcome addition to the regular TV staple for Filipino fans.
“I think we need events like this to make tennis more popular. I don’t see why not because it’s a great game,” said Lorenza.
The Manila leg is the second stop of the IPTL in the whole month of December. Kobe, Japan will host the first leg on December 2-4 followed by New Delhi on December 10-12, Dubai on December 14-16, and Singapore on December 18-20.
