RUBEN Gonzales defeated Danai Udomchoke, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, on Sunday at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu Lapu City to power the Philippines to the third round of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II.

Gonzales’ reverse singles victory in a battle of top-seeded netters from their respective countries gave the Filipino Davis Cuppers the right to face New Zealand in September where a seat in Group I is at stake.

Gonzales also handed the Philippines its first win of the tie when he defeated Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 3-0, on Friday.

On Saturday, Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara defeated Nuttanon Kadchapanan and Pruchya Isarow, 6-3 6-3, 7-6 (4), in the doubles.

Udomchoke beat Johnny Arcilla in the second singles match, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.
