Gaby Zoleta makes presence felt with title triumph in 26th Andrada Cup

    Jan 9, 2015

GABY ZOLETA defeated Macie Carlos, 6-0, 6-1, on Thursday to capture the girls 12-under title even as John Bryan Otico barged in the finals of both boys 16-under and 18-under divisions of the 26th Andrada Cup age-group tennis championships at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 11-year-old Zoleta, a second-generation tennis player from Lucena, completed her romp with easy victories over Julia Ignacio (6-0, 6-0) in the second round, and Bettina Catoto (6-1, 6-0) in the semifinals to dominate her age bracket.

But the niece of former national players Bien and Bambi shared the spotlight with Otico, a 15-year-old prized find from Bukidnon who is on the verge of a double title run in two divisions in the meet sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Altamar Shipping, Tru-Flex and Thaddeus Sporting Goods.

Otico, top seed in both divisions, made the finals of the boys 18-under after a hard-earned 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 triumph over Cenon Gonzales Jr.

He also marched to the championship in the 16-under class after beating Justin Suarez, 6-2, 6-0, in the event held in honor of former Philippine Tennis Association president and now PSC commissioner Salvador “Buddy” Andrada.

A protege of the Philippine Tennis Academy, Otico will gun for the 18-under title against another promising netter in Chris Justin Prulla, who advanced after outlasting Jerome Silva, 7-5, 6-4.

Otico will face Gonzales, a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) winner over Jerome Romualdez, for the 16-under top plum.

Buoyed by his sensational upset wins, John Michael Belo also booked finals slots in 10-under unisex and boys 12-under.

Davao City pride and another PTA standout Shaira Hope Rivera crashed to the final of the girls 18-under division after a stunning 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) upset of top seed Chrislyn Colleen Sioson. She will face in the championship the winner between Monica Therese Cruz and Frances Santiago.

Santiago pulled an upset in the girls 16-under semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 shocker over top seed Sioson. But Santiago will have her hands full in the final as she will take on second seed Cruz, who edged Rafaella Villanueva, 6-2, 6-1, in the other match-up.

Another upset ax fell when Jed Justin Labasano pulled the rug from under top seed Marcus del Rosario, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in the boys 14-under semis. Labasano gets to test his mettle against second seed Nio Tria, who made the final via walkover over Aljohn Talatayod.

In the 10-under unisex, top seed Marc Andrei Jarata forged a final duel against giant-killer Belo.

Jarata defeated Riley Matheu Banaag, 6-4, 6-0, while Belo crushed Prince Patrick Salvacio, 6-0, 6-0.

Belo actually made it to twice in the finals as he qualified in the boys 12-under via an impressive 6-1, 4-6, (10-8) win over Rafael Liangco.

But Belo will face uphill battle against top seed Miguel Luis Vicencio, who drubbed Jarata, 6-0, 6-3, in the other semis match.
