STILL trying to make sense of it all after booking a maiden WTA500 grass-court semifinal, Alex Eala found herself doing so against someone she once grew up watching.
“Elina is a huge fighter. I've seen it many times. I've been watching her since I was a kid, so facing her here is an honor,” she said in a post-game interview.
“She's a mother. I admire her, just elegance and strength. It's a huge honor to share the court with her.”

The win marked her sixth career victory over a Top 10 player and came on the back of what is already the biggest of her career, a triumph over world No. 2 Elena Rybakina earlier in the tournament.
Beyond the breakthroughs, Eala was quick to put into perspective the weight of the moment as she faced and defeated a player she has long admired.
“That sounds amazing. I can't believe it. I'm in shock right now,” the 21-year-old said after defeating former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina in their first career meeting.
More than the sequence of statement wins, she pointed to the steady growth in her game as the real takeaway.
"I think I'm getting better. I hope I'm getting better. Being exposed to this kind of level forces you to [grow]. Some weeks are just better than the others," she explained.
The results now feed into her push for a first WTA Tour-level title as she continues to build on her breakthrough run on grass.
So far, the Filipina has captured two WTA125 titles, in Birmingham to open her grass season, and in Guadalajara in 2025.
