Tennielle Madis and Elizabeth Abarquez lost their opening matches, leaving Alex Eala and Kaye Anna Emana to fly the flag in the first WTA tournament to be hosted by the country.

Madis, 18 years old and the ITF juniors No. 196 player, lost to Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, WTA No. 197, 6-4, 6-0, in the second-to-last match on center court before Alex Eala’s nightcap.
Abarquez, on the other hand, was blanked, 0-6, 0-6, by Japan’s Mai Hontama earlier in the day.
Eala was playing Alina Charaeva of Russia at posting time while Emana opens her campaign against Tatiana Prozorova on Tuesday.

Other results saw fifth seed Camila Osorio of Colombia turn back Japan’s Sakura Hosogi, 6-4, 6-3, to set up a round-of-16 clash with Hontama.
Yulia Starodubsteva also dispatched qualifier Peangtarn Plipuech, 6-0, 6-4, while Lanlana Tararudee outlasted Simona Waltert, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Tararudee next faces Polina Kudermetova, who advanced via 6-3, 7-5 win over Miho Kuramochi.
