EVERY page Alex Eala turned at Wimbledon was a first.
The final one came in defeat, but it did nothing to diminish a chapter that became the greatest Grand Slam campaign in Philippine tennis history.
The 21-year-old Filipina saw her dream run end in the Round of 16 of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, falling to Italian Jasmine Paolini, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, on Centre Court at the All England Club on Monday night (Manila time).
The loss left Eala with a 12-4 record across her grass-court swing, which included a title run at the WTA 125 Birmingham, as well as campaigns at Queen's Club, the Berlin Open, Bad Homburg, and Wimbledon.
In the two-hour, 16-minute match, Eala struggled to find her footing early, dropping the opening set after Paolini built a 5-2 cushion. The Filipina responded in the second, overcoming a 2-3 deficit by winning four of the final five games to force a deciding set.
The decider was tightly contested early, with Eala twice erasing one-game deficits to level at 2-2 and 3-3. Paolini, however, regained control by winning the final three games to close out the match.
The 30-year-old Italian will next face Marta Kostyuk in the final eight.
Eala entered the match holding a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Paolini after a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory at the Dubai Championships last February. Paolini's win evened the series at one apiece.
