ARGUABLY saving the best for last, Jessica Pegula standing in the way of Alex Eala's pursuit of her first WTA Tour title is the tallest task yet.
The current world No. 3 and tournament top seed returns to the site of her breakthrough, having won her maiden WTA title in Washington back in 2019, when Eala was still competing in the ITF juniors circuit.
Beating Pegula would mean more than a timely payback from their lone previous meeting, where the American escaped with a three-set win in the 2025 Miami Open.
It would also deny the home bet a celebration in the U.S. capital, while handing Eala her first tour-level title in her maiden WTA 500 final - and just the second tour-level final of her career.
Eala fell heartbreakingly to Maya Joint in the WTA 250 Eastbourne final in 2025, and took more than a year for another shot at a title.
Eala's way back
The Filipina earned her place in the championship match by knocking off Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, seventh seed and defending DC Open champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina, and third seed Naomi Osaka.
Pegula, meanwhile, received a first-round bye before beating Magda Linette, fifth seed Anna Kalinskaya, and fourth seed Diana Shnaider to reach the final.
Eala is also looking to improve to 9-4 against Top 10 opponents. A victory over Pegula would mean she would have beaten every Top 10 player she has faced, with the American the last name on the list after she had exacted revenge on Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, and Jasmine Paolini.
Eala and Pegula clash on Monday at 12 a.m., Manila time.
The winner will receive $252,000, while the finalist will take home $155,000.
Eala is also projected to improve to at least No. 25 in the overall rankings, and even higher should she win all 500 points.
