BIG test awaits Alex Eala, as she charges into the Round of 64 of the Mutua Madrid Open, where she faces Belgian standout Elise Mertens on Friday at 6:30 PM, Manila time.
Fresh off a composed 6-3, 6-3 opening win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the 20-year-old Filipina now braces for a step up in competition against the top-ranked doubles player and current No. 21 in singles.

Mertens, who owns a career-high singles ranking of No. 12, enters the clash well-rested after receiving a first-round bye by virtue of being the tournament’s 19th seed.
Their upcoming duel marks a second career meeting, with Mertens holding a 1-0 edge courtesy of a 7-5, 6-0 win during their 2023 Tunisia encounter in the Round of 32.
Despite the pedigree, the Belgian is coming off a Round of 16 exit at the Stuttgart Open, where she fell to Karolina Muchova in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0, just last week.

For Eala, the Madrid clay presents both opportunity and challenge to prep for the 2026 Roland Garros by mid-May.
