TRUTH be told, few young tennis players have had their popularity scrutinized quite like Alex Eala.
The 21-year-old has introduced a whole new audience to a sport that has never been among the Philippines' biggest.
She has packed courts with flag-waving and loudly cheering Filipinos, generated staggering online engagement, and become one of the most recognizable faces among tennis's next generation.

Yet her rise has also invited a familiar question.
No Grand Slam title. No WTA Tour title. Just two WTA 125 crowns, a handful of near-breakthrough runs, and seven victories over Top 10 opponents.

To some, these are far from enough to explain her spotlight. "Why all the fame," they ask.
The debate has followed nearly every wildcard and every marketable opportunity afforded to the Filipina.
Eala, however, has never seen her platform as something to justify.
She sees it as something to honor.
"This exposure with my platform that I have allows me to really self-reflect. It allows me to become the best version of myself because I know that a lot of people look up to me," she said during Sunday's Wimbledon third round press conference.
While the noise is ultimately beyond her control, she's generous enough to offer a glimpse into how she processes it.
"I try to be as authentic as I can. I believe in being genuine. I believe in my values," she said.
The next generation
Whenever she visits home, she spends time with her family, pays visits to her grassroots institution, and is never stingy with her time among her peers, building close relationships with her national teammates.
"It's an honor to be able to pave the way for young girls, and it would be the honor of my life to be able to inspire others," she continued.

But as she has carved a path that has opened so many firsts for her country, Eala circles back to how it was never really about her.
As she put it, "I don't want them to look at me and say, 'I want to be the next Alex Eala.' Instead, I want them to look at me and say, 'I want to make my own path.'"
And perhaps that's the best answer to the question that has followed her throughout her young career.
