Alex Eala bows out of Veneto Open, still registers best WTA finish

IT took former French Open finalist Sara Errani to stop Alex Eala’s march in the WTA Challenger Veneto Open, as the Filipina exited in the quarterfinals, falling in straight sets, 0-6, 6(3)-7 on Friday (early Saturday morning, Manila time).

Still, the quarterfinals exit is Eala's best finish in a WTA tournament.

Errani's revenge

Against the 4-seed, Eala started out flat as she was blanked in the opening set and felt her back against the wall from the get-go.

The Philippines' tennis star quickly got back on her feet with a better showing in the second set, even taking a 4-3 lead, only to fall victim to Errani’s comeback.

The Italian squandered a 3-1 lead against Eala before gaining her bearings to emerge victorious in the tiebreak.

Earlier this year, the 19-year-old Filipina dropped an upset ax on Errani in the opening round of the Miami Open qualifiers.
