ALEX Eala beat Annerly Poulos of Australia, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the 2019 US Open junior girls competition on Monday (Tuesday, Manila time).
The 14-year-old Filipina netter continued her sterling play in the Grand Slam event, breaking Poulos, her doubles partner in the ITF Juniors circuit, four times on her way to the victory.
Eala will face Mai Napatt Nirundorn of Thailand in the second round. Nirundorn got past eighth-seeded Hurricane Tyra Black of the US, 1-6, 5-2 (retired).
The unranked Eala pulled off a stunning win to enter the main draw at the US Open after winning over top-seed 18-year-old Romana Cisovska of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-0, in the qualifiers.
Eala beat Kimmi Hance of the United States, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round of the qualifiers.
