Doubles pair aid Archers' escape in UAAP tennis

    Jan 16, 2013

DOUBLES tandem Ed Amor and Akio Sy delivered as defending champion La Salle escaped with a 3-2 victory over University of the Philippines to remain unscathed in the UAAP Season 75 men’s tennis tournament on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

University of Santo Tomas, behind the exploits of reigning MVP Macy Gonzales, started its title-retention bid on a smashing note by blanking Ateneo, 5-0.

Amor and Sy held their own in the decider to edge out the Fighting Maroons duo of Miggy Belda and Rex Brinas, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6).

The Green Archers, who are seeking their eighth title overall, notched their third consecutive victory.

Last season’s runner-up National University kept within striking distance of La Salle, as the Bulldogs shut out University of the East, 5-0, at the resumption of their rained out tie last Saturday.

    NU improved to 2-0.

The Archers won the first two matches, with Alberto Villamor winning over Franklin Encarnacio, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening singles, and the duo of Pemrik Alina and Kyle Cordero pulling off a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (8) squeaker over Joshua Miranda in the first doubles.

Angelo Esguerra and Gabby Gutierrez led the UP fightback by winning over Ernesto Pantua, 6-1, 6-4, and JF Regis, 6-2, 7-6 (4), in their respective singles matches to forge a decider.

Gonzales capped the Tigresses domination with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Niquie Angelo in the third singles.

Other UST winners were Lenelyn Milo, who defeated Darlene Tuazon in the first singles, 6-1, 6-0; Gi Helar and Dianne Bautista, who whipped Jessica Lagman and Jana Exconde, 6-1, 6-0, in first doubles; Zaza Paulino, who beat Shanin Olivarez, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in second singles; and last year’s top rookie April Santos and Honey Giles, who blanked Joanne Opulencia and Mary Rivero, 6-0, 6-0, in second singles.
