DESIRAE Krawczyk, an American player of Filipino descent, and her partner Alexa Guarachi of Chile advanced to the finals of the women’s doubles after beating Iga Swaitek and Nicole Melichar, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4, on Friday at Roland Garros.
Ranked No. 14 in the competition, Krawczyk and Guarachi faces second-seed Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic in the ladies doubles final set on Sunday.
Krawczyk is born to a Polish father and a Filipina mother in Rancho Mirage, California, according to her profile at richathletes.com. According to the website, his father Teddy was his first coach.
Her mother Maria, meanwhile, traces her roots in Cagayan.
Krawczyk competed in the Philippines 10 years ago when she was 16, ruling the PCA Open women’s singles crown. Krawczyk defeated Anna Christina Patrimonio, 7-6, 6-3, in the women’s final.
A product of Arizona State University, Krawczyk is having a banner year in 2020, reaching 38th in the WTA doubles rankings, her highest in her career.
Krawczyk has won two titles this season, in the Istanbul Cup in September with Guarachi and the Mexico Open in February with Giuliana Olmos.
En route to the final at Roland Garros, Krawcyk and Guarachi bested top-ranked Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic, 6-4, 7-5, in the third round. They also won over seventh-seed Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara of Japan, 6-0, 6-4.
