WHEN the lights shine the brightest, the more Alex Eala embraces the moment.
Before the Filipina phenom turned heads at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a stunning 6-1, 7-6(5) upset of world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini, she had already burnished her resume in nine previous clashes against the world's Top 20 players.

It all started during a dream run at the 2025 Miami Open.
Ranked No. 140 in the world then and in the tournament as a wildcard, Eala shocked former Grand Slam champion and then world No. 20 Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 64, then powered past No. 5 Madison Keys in the Round of 32 to reach the quarterfinals against Iga Swiatek.
She pushed her way into the semifinals with a victory over the top seed and world No. 2 before world No. 4 Jessica Pegula halted the fairytale campaign. But the historic run enabled her to crack the Top 100 and secur direct entries into Grand Slams and elite-level main draws.
The battles didn’t stop there.
Swiatek evened their head-to-head record at 1-1 with victory in the second round of Madrid. Eala repeated against Ostapenko on the way to the Eastbourne final, then made her Wimbledon debut, where world No. 16 Barbora Krejcikova ended her run after the Filipina made history as the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam main draw match, defeating world No. 14 Clara Tauson in the opener.
She opened the new season strong as well, reaching the quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi before she was ousted by world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova. Then came her latest statement win over Paolini in Dubai.

Eala now has a 6-4 record against Top 20 opponents.
