TREAT Huey of the Philippines and Max Mirnyi of Belarus advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open men’s doubles after a stunning 6-4, 6-3 win over fourth seeds Rohan Bopanna of India and Florin Mergea of Romania on Monday in Melbourne.
Huey and Mirnyi took command as Bopanna and Mergea committed eight double faults and 23 unforced errors.
Huey and Mirnyi next face Daniel Nestor of Canada and Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic. Nestor and Stepanek defeated the Spanish pair of Pablo Andujar and Pablo Carreno Busta, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Top seeds Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romania beat Marco Cecchinato and Andreas Seppi of Italy, 7-6, 6-3, and the third-ranked Bryan brothers Bob and Mike beat Raven Klaasen of Russia and Rajeev Ram of United States, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to also make it to the quarterfinals.
No. 2 seeds Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Marcelo Melo of Brazil were eliminated by Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and Marcel Granollers of Spain, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
