TOP seed Johnny Arcilla overcame doubles partner Vicente Anasta in their showdown for the men’s singles crown, fashioning out a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 victory in the third Olivarez Cup Open Tennis Championship on Sunday at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat.
Arcilla dominated the early part of the match but was made to work by Anasta, last year’s champion, in the second and third to complete the title romp without dropping a set. He scored 6-0, 6-1 victories over Kyle Joseph and Arc Dolorito then blasted brother Joseph Arcilla, 6-3, 6-2, before disposing of Kim Saraza, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarters and No. 4 Rolando Ruel Jr., 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Anasta defeated Patrick Tierro in the semis, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, to advance to the title match.
Arcilla and Anasta earlier joined forces to beat Marc Reyes and Tierro, 6-4, 7-6 (4), and claim the men’s doubles title in the tournament presented by Palawan Pawnshop and held in honor of former Parañaque mayor Pablo Olivarez.
Marian Capadocia took the ladies Open crown of the event sponsored by Dunlop Sports, Stronghold Insurance, FedEx Air21 and Olivarez Sports Center by beating last year’s winner Clarice Patrimonio, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
But Clarice and sister Christine Patrimonio beat Marian and sister Jella Capadocia, 6-4, 6-2, in the doubles finals.
Meanwhile, Palawan Pawnshop resumes its age-group tournaments with the staging of the Cainta-Palawan Pawnshop Open from March 18 to 24 to be followed by the Palawan Pawnshop Age Group event on March 30 to April 3.
