LAPU-LAPU CITY – Veteran Johnny Arcilla opens the Philippines’ Davis Cup campaign Friday as he takes on Issam Haitham of Syria in the opening singles of their Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.
The 31-year-old Arcilla, the most senior player in the team who’s been a Davis Cupper since 2000, had been nominated the no.2 player of the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine team by non-playing captain Roland Kraut during the official drawing of lots held Thursday and presided over by Lapu Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza.
Fil-Am Ruben Gonzales, the team’s no. 1 player, battles Syrian no. 2 Marc Abdelnour in day’s second singles.
Doubles specialist Treat Huey and Elbert Anasta teamed up for Saturday’s doubles against the tandem of Abdelnour and Majdi Salim.
The reverse singles is slated Sunday and will have Gonzales clashing with Taweel, before Arcilla meets Abdelnour.
