Amazona, Espinosa reign in Cebu HEAD Jr. leg

    May 5, 2013

YOUNG guns Jeleardo Amazona and Hannah Espinosa overwhelmend their respective foes to rule the fifth leg of 2013 HEAD Junior Satellite Circuit national tennis age-group tournament Cebu leg recently at the Consolacion Cebu tennis courts in Cebu.

Amazona, already a winner in the Davao and General Santos legs of the tournament, regained his winning form by ousting Cebuano Francis Parangan in a dramatic finale, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, to bring home the boys’ singles 18-under class title.

But he could only settle for a runner-up honor in the boys’ 16-under singles division after losing to Mikko Ringia, 3-6, retired, in the title match of the event supported by Smart Sports, Chris Sports, Meralco, Maynilad, Toalson and Head, the official tennis ball.

“I was exhausted due to the heat,” said Amazona, a native of Davao Oriental. “But I’m happy to win another title again.”

Espinosa, meanwhile, scored a 6-2, 7-5 win over Erika Manduriao for the girls’ 18-under singles crown, while Alexie Santos of Palawan rallied past Jana Pages of Cebu, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5, for the girls’ 16-under singles trophy.

In the 14 under category, Alexie Santos routed Zethley Mae Alferez, 6-2,6-0, for the girls' crown, while Janus Ringia won against Rustin Suarez via walkover for the boys' title.
