IN a sport defined by rivalries, Alex Eala and Iva Jovic reminded everyone that friendship can still exist at the highest level of competition.
The two young stars faced each other for the first time professionally in the Round of 128 of Roland Garros on Tuesday night, where world No. 17 and 17th seed Jovic came away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over 37th-ranked Eala.

But even after the match ended on one of tennis’ grandest stages, what happened after defined the moment even more.

In true Gen Z fashion, Jovic on Instagram shared a heartfelt message for the Filipina, writing: “One of those days I wish there could be two winners. I love you Alex.”
Eala responded with the same warmth, commenting: “No one I’d rather share the court with, love you girl.”
Bond beyond the court
Both still teenagers when they first crossed paths in the junior circuit, Eala and Jovic spent years sharing practice courts, tournaments, and the unique pressures that come with being young players on the rise.
Just days before facing each other in Paris, Jovic was even among the friends who surprised Eala with a birthday cake during practice, alongside fellow players Eva Lys and Zeynep Sonmez.

While only one could advance onward in the French Open, their exchange afterward showed that some relationships in sport matter more than the result itself.
The American will next face compatriot Emma Navarro in the second round.
Eala, for her part, will play in the doubles circuit not before 8:30 PM on Wednesday, partnering with another friend in Vicky Mboko of Canada.
