THE Philippines clinched a spot in the ITF World Junior Tennis on Thursday for the first time in 26 years after defeating Hong Kong, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Asia/Oceania qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur.
Alex Eala blanked Man Wai Chloris Li, 6-0, 6-0, while Alexa Joy Milliam won over Lok Shu Tang, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the semifinals of the 14-and-under tournament against Korea.
By making the top four, the Philippines punched a ticket to the World Group of the World Juniors Tournament to be held in Czech Republic this August. The Philippines is in the world juniors tournament for the first time since 1993.
Japan and China have also booked seats in the World Juniors Tournament for Asia/Oceania.
The Philippines, coached by Czarina Mae Arevalo, swept Group C, beating Sri Lanka, Indonesia and New Zealand to clinch a quarterfinal berth.
