A FAMILIAR challenge awaits Alex Eala in the desert.

Fresh off her gritty opening win in the BNP Paribas Open, the Filipina rising star faces a daunting round-of-32 clash against world nNo. 4 Coco Gauff in a highly anticipated rematch between the two young standouts.

The duel, set not before 9 a.m. on Monday [Manila time], comes just weeks after the former doubles partners' encounter at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where Gauff outlasted Eala in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 event, 6-0, 6-2.

“It was a tough match for me last time," said Eala in an interview posted on the tournament's website. "So all I can do is take the learnings that I have from our last match and try to implement that in our next one.”

"Well, it's not my first huge match. I think it's definitely going to be a tough one. Coco is an amazing player and playing at home. I'm expecting, you know, a big crowd to rally behind her just because she's amazing.

"But it's like every other match. You know, today I had to dig really deep, so I'm expecting that the next match I have to do even more, you know. So I'm ready, and I'm looking forward to it, yeah."

Eala enters the meeting riding the momentum of a breakthrough season that has seen her climb into the Top 32 of the WTA rankings and earn a spot in the main draw of Indian Wells for the very first time.

Her dramatic opening victory against Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, adds to the growing narrative around her presence that has become one of the tournament’s emerging storylines.

Indian Wells itself recently highlighted the so-called “Eala effect,” noting the increasing buzz surrounding the rising star as Filipino fans continue to show up in full force for her matches anywhere in the world.

That same crowd dynamic is something Gauff already knows well.

The American star, coming off a win over Kamilla Rakhimova, 6-3, 7-6(5) in her opening match, has grown accustomed to playing in front of a loud and passionate Filipino following whenever she faces Eala, or plays on the court before her, acknowledging in past tournaments how electrifying the support can be for the Filipina.

“I see why people want to root for her," Gauff said. "I root for her when I’m not playing her.”

Eala and Gauff also once shared the same side of the net, teaming up in doubles at the Italian Open last year where the pair got as far as the quarterfinals.

But friendship will take a backseat once again in their second meeting this season as Eala hopes to even out their personal record.
