AS she goes full circle from her career-defining Miami Open breakthrough last year, Alex Eala doesn’t pretend to know what comes next.

In tennis, results can swing quickly, even for the best in the world.

Moments after her run at the Indian Wells Open ended at the hands of an in-form world No. 14 Linda Noskova, the 20-year old Filipina rising star admitted the loss stings, but prefers to focus on the big picture.

“I’m in the fourth round of Indian Wells,” Eala said of an impressive debut in what it regarded as the 'fifth major' in the world of tennis. “I’m really happy about that. It’s still something I’m really proud of.”

For a player who was still trying to break through the WTA ranks just a year ago, this milestone speaks volumes.

When Eala entered the Miami Open last season, she was ranked around No. 140 in the world, still finding her place on the WTA tour.

Twelve months later, after her latest run, the 20-year-old now sits at No. 28 in the live rankings, No. 32 in the official —a rise fueled by points and the growing belief that she can hold her own against the game’s best.

Those experiences, she said, are what continue to shape her.

“It’s a learning experience. Down the line, I believe it will have a positive impact on my progression as a player.”

Which brings her back to Miami, the place where much of this momentum first began.

Eala isn’t trying to predict what will happen when she returns.

“I can’t speak for the future,” she said. “I don’t know if I’ll win the tournament or lose in the first round.”

That uncertainty, in many ways, is nature.

She, however, has one thing she now carries with her: clear conviction.

“I know that I belong here,” Eala said.

The results may change. The draw may shift. The run may be deep or cut short.

But the Filipina rising star is certain she isn't going anywhere.

“I’m here,” she said. “And I’m here to stay.”
