REVENGE never looked this sweet for Alex Eala.
More than a month after falling to Elena Rybakina on clay swing, the Filipina finally got her payback —and in emphatic fashion at that.
Eala pulled off the biggest win of her season, stunning the world No. 2, 7-5, 6-4, to storm into the quarterfinals of the Berlin Tennis Open on early Friday morning (Manila time).
The victory ranks as the most significant of Eala's career since her breakthrough run at the 2025 Miami Open, where she toppled then-world No. 2 Iga Swiatek on her way to a historic semifinal appearance.
For a while, though, it looked like Rybakina would once again play spoiler.
The former Wimbledon champion raced to a commanding lead in the opening set, putting Eala in an early three-game hole and seemingly in danger of being overpowered by one of the sport's most feared ball-strikers.
But the 21-year-old Filipina had other plans.
Alex Holds Tough
Eala clawed her way back to level terms at 4-4, absorbed Rybakina's heavy hitting, and pounced when the opportunity finally came at 5-5, and took two straight to snatch the opening set.
Rybakina tried to reassert her authority on her favored surface in the second frame, flashing the form that made her the world's No. 2 player.
Yet every punch thrown by the Kazakh was met with an answer from Eala.
Locked at 1-1, the Filipina shifted into another gear, stringing together the key points to build a 4-2 advantage.
Rybakina pulled off a little scare coming close at 5-4, before Eala managed to stay compose to seal the win within an hour and 32.
Eala set up a match against another Top 10 player in Elina Svitolina, world No. 8, in the quarterfinal.
It would be the first time for the two players to face each other.
Berlin marks Eala's third tournament on grass following a title run at WTA125 Birmingham and a round of 16 exit at the Queens last week.
Enroute to the second round of the WTA500, she also ended the 6-0 streak of recently-hailed Queens champ, Donna Vekic.
