CALL it a low-budget industry with the most Filipino twist.
The good ol' "GCash livestreams” are back, and they’ve found their groove again on the Facebook feeds of most sports fans, just in time for the rise of Filipina tennis talent Alex Eala on the WTA Tour.
It’s the same formula, just with a fresh spark. A phone camera pointed at a screen, a running score in the captions, conversations in the comments, sometimes delayed, sometimes not, and a steady stream of viewers popping in and out.

Then there’s the real hook: a mobile number pinned on-screen, ready to receive a few pesos of 'donations' through the mobile wallet GCash, turning every match into a mini interactive watch party.
A business that used to thrive during PBA and Gilas Pilipinas games has now shifted courtside to tennis. Eala’s matches, often harder to access for casual fans since there is no local television carrier for WTA matches, have become the perfect vehicle.
There are no threats of takedowns or lawsuits of the unofficial livestreams from local broadcast rights holders, unlike the games of PBA and Gilas whose copyright is owned by the Cignal and TV5 group.
However, PBA and Gilas games, which used to be the main business of the 'GCash boys,' as they've come to be known on Facebook, have become less appealing especially for overseas-based fans since Cignal made the PBA matches available on its YouTube channel.

But since Eala broke through with a phenomenal run to the semifinals of the 2025 Miami Open, and demand for live coverage of her matches spiked, the 'GCash boys' willingly stepped in to fill the void.
By estimates, donations can easily reach in the thousands for some high-profile matches, especially if a generous OFW decides to pop in.
The chat section moves like a barkada group chat, with some keyboard warriors arguing, reactions piling up, and small donations turning into instant on-screen recognition. No production crew, no delay screens, just pure, unfiltered fandom.
Messy? Sometimes. Pixelated? Often.
But in its own way, it’s accessible and community-driven.
