DEBUTING in the desert, Alex Eala will face a familiar opponent in Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine in the Round of 64 at the 2026 Indian Wells in California.
The Filipina world no. 32 is set to play her first match in the tournament’s second round after earning a first-round bye as the no. 31 seed.
Standing in her way is the 25-year-old Ukrainian, currently ranked no. 52 in the WTA with a career-high of no. 21.

Yastremska booked her place in the second round after defeating Zhang Shuai, 6-3, 6-2, in the Round of 128.
It will not be the first meeting between the two. The pair previously faced off on grass at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, a WTA 250 event in Great Britain.
Eala dominated that encounter, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The Filipina eventually reached the final of the tournament before falling to Maya Joint.
Eala heads into Indian Wells after a quarterfinal finish at the Dubai Tennis Championships where she bowed to world no. 4 Coco Gauff.
Yastremska, who also competed in Dubai, had a brief campaign in the Merida Open where she exited in the Round of 32. She likewise suffered an early exit in Dubai after losing to Janice Tjen, 6-4, 6-1, in the opening round.
While Eala continues her search for a first WTA Tour title —with a WTA 125 crown currently her lone trophy— Yastremska already owns three tour titles.
She won in Hong Kong in 2018 before adding two more in 2019 in Hua Hin, Thailand and Strasbourg, where she notably upset then world no. 11 Aryna Sabalenka during her run.
Eala and Yastremska are scheduled to clash on Saturday, March 7, with the match time yet to be determined.
