THE Czech wall stands firm for Alex Eala.
World No. 14 Karolina Muchova delivered a masterclass, dismantling the Filipina, 6-0, 6-2, to book a quarterfinal berth at the Miami Open on Monday night [Manila time].
Eala found herself chasing shadows early, going scoreless in the opening set as Muchova seized full control with her impressive all-court coverage before a loud crowd at the Grandstand court of Hard Rock Stadium.

The 31st seed showed late resistance, finally getting on the board in the fifth game of the second set. But the 13th-seeded Czech quickly snuffed out any spark to seal the win in exactly an hour.
the loss extends a rough stretch for Eala against Czech opposition: her Indian Wells Open run was halted by Muchova's compatriot Linda Noskova, while another Czech, Tereza Valentova, cut short her Qatar Open campaign.
Ironically, it was in that same tournament that Muchova won her second WTA title, adding to her 2019 Seoul breakthrough.

Despite the one-sided loss, Eala walks away with 120 points from Miami after victories over Germany’s Laura Siegemund and Magda Linette, which should cushion her fall in the WTA rankings.
With 390 points to defend from last year’s semifinal run, the 21-year old is set for a net drop of 270 in the next rankings update. She is currently at a career-high world No. 29.
The tour moves on quickly for both players.
Eala shifts focus to the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, which marks her transition to the clay season, while Muchova marches into the quarterfinals in pursuit of a third career title, where she will meet either Mirra Andreeva or Victoria Mboko.
