A CLAY doubles return didn’t last long for Alex Eala as she and partner Katie Volynets bowed to the American duo of Christina Rosca and Carmen Corley, 3-6, 4-6, in the round of 16 of the WTA 125 Oeiras in Portugal on Wednesday night (Manila Time).

The Filipino-American pair wasn’t able to catch up after a slow start, trailing the tournament’s fourth seeds early in the match.

After their opponents broke serve at 3-4 in the first set, Rosca and Corley won the remaining games to gain momentum and started the second set strong.

Rosca and Corley, ranked WTA No. 180 and 112 respectively, jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second set before Eala and Volynets rallied to take two games and close the gap to 2-3. However, the Americans proved too strong, quickly regaining control and sealing the win by taking the next two games.

The 19-year-old Filipina ace remains alive in the women’s singles draw, where she is the top seed.
