ANOTHER surface, another month, another showdown with world No. 2 Elena Rybakina.
Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala, ranked No. 35 in the world, set up a rematch with the Kazakhstani star in the round of 16 of the Berlin Tennis Open after a strong opening-round victory.
Eala booked her spot by taking out Croatian Donna Vekic on Wednesday night, halting the six-game win streak that carried the former Wimbledon semifinalist to the Queen's Club title just days earlier.
Awaiting the Filipina is Rybakina, whom she faced for the first time only last month in the second round of the Italian Open on clay. The world No. 2 prevailed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Seeded second in Berlin, Rybakina received a first-round bye and enters the tournament looking to bounce back from a quarterfinal exit at Queen's Club, where she fell to Britain's Katie Boulter, 5-7, 6-2, 5-7.
Interestingly, Boulter is a familiar opponent for Eala. The Filipina defeated the Briton, 6-4, 2-1 ret., during their meeting at the Hong Kong Open in 2025.
Riding the momentum from her upset win over Vekic and her title-winning run at the WTA 125 Birmingham Classic, Eala will look to solve the Rybakina puzzle. They will meet on Thursday night, Manila Time, not before 11:30 PM.
The Berlin event marks Eala's third grass-court tournament and 17th competition overall this season.
After encouraging campaigns on hard courts and clay, the 21-year-old continues her preparations for Wimbledon, where she is set to make only the second main-draw appearance of her career in the grass grand slam.
