PHILIPPINE tennis sensation Alex Eala rang in the new year with a career milestone as she surged five places in the WTA rankings for a new high of world No. 185.
On the latest week-by-week rankings released on New Year’s Day, Eala improved from her previous ranking of No. 190 on Christmas Day to beat her previous career high of No. 189, which she achieved in October 2023.
The 18-year-old reached the milestone after beginning her season the day before with a narrow loss to Swiss hitter Celine Naef in the qualifiers of the Canberra International.
The tournament serves as a warm-up for Eala’s bid in the qualifiers of the Australian Open women’s singles tournament beginning next week.

During her offseason, Eala spent some time in Manila to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. She also caught Game Two of the PVL 2nd All-Filipino Conference Finals in December.
Going into 2024, Eala shared lofty goals as she continues her climb in professional tennis.
“Hopefully [in 2024], my goal is to join all four Grand Slams.” she told Philippine media last month.
