ALEX Eala bucked a sluggish start to hurdle her first challenge at the W125 Guadalajara Open in Mexico on Tuesday morning (Manila time).
After falling short of the main draw in the US Open last month, Eala drubbed American Victoria Hu in three sets, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4, at the Round of 32.
To survive, the Filipina had to survive 13 aces by Hu against her four.
The 19 year old recovered quickly from an opening-set loss then rode her momentum in the third set of a three-hour match.
Daunting task for Eala
Eala set herself up for a challenge against No. 4 seed and former world No. 42 Tatjana Maria in the Round of 16 slated on Thursday (Manila time).
Maria hurdled US bet Kayla Day in the opening round, 7-6(7), 6-4.
