Alcantara opens tie against Indonesia No. 1

Philippines looks to climb back to Group I as it takes on Indonesia in crucial tie
Sep 13, 2012

FRANCIS Casey Alcantara kicks off the Philippines' Davis Cup campaign on Friday when he plays Indonesia's top player Christopher Rungkat in the opening singles of their 2012 Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie at the Gelora Bung Karno Tennis Stadium in the capital city of Jakarta.

The country’s No. 1 netter Treat Huey then takes on Indonesian No. 2 Elbert Sie in the second singles match of the tie where the winner advances to Group 1 and the loser stays in Group II.

Rungkat, two-gold winner in last year's Indonesia Southeast Asian Games, is the highest-ranked among the players from both sides at No. 292 in the world today.

Jeson Patrombon and Ruben Gonzales have been nominated by non-playing team captain Roland Kraut for Saturday’s doubles against Rungkat and Sie, although the lineup can still be changed.

Completing the Indonesian squad are Aditya Hari Sasongko and Sunu-Wahyu Trijati.

The tie is the 10th Davis Cup meeting between the Philippines and Indonesia, with the latter holding a close 5-4 edge over the Filipinos.
