UST jins Christian Al dela Cruz and Ernest John Mendoza won gold medals for Team UAAP-Philippines on Friday in the 16th Asean University Games in Vientiane, Laos.
Dela Cruz, the UAAP Season 75 MVP, needed a strong third round showing to defeat Pham Huu Son of Vietnam, 8-4, in the men’s welterweight finals, while middleweight Mendoza won with the disqualification of hometown bet Sawatvilay Phimmasone.
Taekwondo jin Jane Narra also of UST and diver Rebecca Pahoyo won bronze medals in the week-long competition organized by the Asean University Sports Council. The council, composed of university sports councils of the Asean member countries, was established in 1980. The Philippines hosted the event 10 years ago in Manila.
Narra lost to Tring Kim Tuong Van of Vietnam, 4-8, in the women’s welterweight semifinals, while Pahoyo won bronze by scoring 205.10 points in the women’s 10-meter platform.
The men’s badminton team led by Ateneo’s Toby Gadi has been eliminated after losing to Malaysia and Indonesia via identical 1-4 results.
Team UAAP-Philippines opened its campaign Thursday, with Ateneo poomsae artists Frances Beatrice Alarilla and Raymund Ed Dominic Bermejo winding up sixth in the mixed pair.
Bermejo finished fifth in the men’s individual event, while Far Eastern University’s Leanarda Nicole Landrito placed seventh in the distaff side.
Malaysia leads the medal tally with a 9-4-12 gold-silver-bronze haul, followed by Vietnam (8-10-16), Laos (8-6-9) and defending overall champion Thailand (4-7-9).
