Another wushu silver for the Philippines as Saclag puts up tough stand before bowing to Chinese rival in final

    Sep 24, 2014

GANGHWA, Korea — Jean Claude Saclag put up a gallant stand before settling for the silver medal, bowing 0-2 to Kong Hongxing of China on Wednesday in the wushu sanda competitions at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gymnasium.

Saclag certainly made a fight of it with solid punches and kicks, but Kong held his own to claim the gold medal in the men’s-60kg event held in the venue nearly two hours away from the Asian Games hub of Incheon.

Saclag was looking to become the first Filipino wushu artist to win an Asiad gold since Rene Catalan topped the -52kg sanshou event eight years ago in Doha.

Wushu fighter Daniel Parantac earlier gave the Philippine its first silver medal in the 2014 Asiad

Nevertheless, Saclag had a smile on his face as he bagged the silver on the eve of his 20th birthday.

“Masaya pa rin kahit talo dahil naka-silver po tayo. Hindi ko in-expect na pahihirapan ko ’yung China. Napanood ko ’yung mga laban niya sa lahat ng nakalaban niya, parang pinaglalaruan lang niya. Buti pa tayo, nahirapan siya ng konti,” said Saclag.

In entering the finals, Saclag beat Narender Grewal of Indonesia, Kyaw Lin Tun of Myanmar and Handrik Tarigan of India.
