PERENNIAL rivals La Salle and University of Santo Tomas swapped places on the UAAP taekwondo podium, with the Archers taking the men’s crown and the Lady Tiger jins taking the women’s title via sweep on Wednesday at the Fil-Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
The Green Archer jins snatched the title from back-to-back champions UST, but the Lady Tiger jins regained the crown they lost two years ago.
National team mainstay Kris Uy came up with the title clincher for La Salle, beating Jeicco Lozano of UST, 15-6. This gave the Green Archers a 4-3 win for a 6-0 sweep of the tournament.
The UST men’s team had a second-best 5-1 mark for the tournament, while University of the Philippines had a 4-2 record for third place.
“Nagtrabaho lahat ng players ko para makuha namin to ngayon,” said coach Roberto Cruz, who now looks forward to next season as an intact DLSU men’s team goes for back-to-back titles and the women’s team tries to win back the crown.
“Next year, mag pa-practice pa kami ng mas mabuti para mag stay sa amin itong title na ’to. Tsaka we still have the same players for next year," said the soft-spoken mentor.
The Lady Tiger jins also completed a sweep of their six outings, capped by a close 4-3 win over the Lady Archers, to regain the title they lost two years ago.
“We really feel happy and blessed for getting the women’s title,” UST coach Gershon Bautista said. “It’s been too long but finally it’s back with us.”
UP placed second in the women’s side with a 5-1 record, while La Salle ended up in third place at 4-2.
Kevin Sia of DLSU and national team member Nicole Abigail Cham of UST were named MVPs, while bagging the Rookie of the Year awards were UST's Juan Miguel Ramos and Ateneo’s Weedee Valenzuela.
