LA SALLE clinched the women’s crown of the UAAP Season 75 table tennis tournament, dethroning University of the Philippines, 3-2, Thursday night at the Blue Eagle gym.
Staring at the possibility of being extended to a deciding game in the finals, newcomer Donna Gamilla took charge and steered the Lady Archers to their first title in eight years.
The 16-year old Gamilla, named the season’s top rookie, scored an 11-7, 11-9, 11-5 win over last year’s MVP Bea Magpantay of the Lady Maroons in the deciding singles match.
It was the second women’s championship for La Salle, which also won in 2004.
The Lady Archers were on a 13-game winning streak until they dropped a close 2-3 decision to UP in Game Two.
Ian Lariba of the Lady Archers went home with the tournament MVP honors, while La Salle's Lauro Crisostomo was named best coach.
