THE 4th Philippine Super League Table Tennis Tournament opens on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Among the players seeing action in the three-day event is 11-year-old Aljay Villena, who participated in the World Championship of Ping Pong in London early this year.
Villena is playing in the under-12 ratings tournament. Other events on tap are junior, cadet and legends.
The tournament will also serve as a basis for selection of players for the Philippine team to the Southeast Asian Table Tennis Association junior and cadet championship in July, according to national head coach Buding Comendador.
“Ang project namin, mga bata talaga kasi para dumami ang maglaro ng table tennis, nagki-clinic kami sa iba’t ibang lugar para dumami ‘yung mga bata,” said Comendador, adding that the Philippine Table Tennis Federatio Inc. is focused on finding new talent for the national team.
“Dati, halos lahat ng mga batang magaling sa Manila. Pero ngayon, dahil sa mga clinics namin sa PSI (Philippine Sports Institute) at sa PTTFi, lalong dumadami ‘yung mga batang gumagaling,” said Comendador.
The singles event will be an open division, which means men and women can compete against each other, a format used in the US Open.
