THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is set to take the controversial case of swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco said the body is planning to file a protest before the world’s highest sports court over the decision to strip Alkhaldi of a gold medal in last year’s Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
Cojuangco said the POC will file a complaint not only over Alkhaldi’s case but also other "biased decisions" that went against Filipino athletes during the December 11-22 biennial meet.
“Hindi lamang sa swimming. There are other areas that should also be taken up. Alang-alang sa mga atletang nadaya,” said Cojuangco in a recent interview with DZSR Sports Radio 918.
The CAS is the so-called Supreme Court of international sports.
Alkhadi was stripped of a gold medal in the 100m freestyle when the jury of appeals ordered a re-swim of the event after a protest was logged by Thailand.
According to the protest, the Thailand swimmer heard a horn signaling a false start that prompted her to stop. However, other swimmers went on with the race won by Alkhaldi.
After the re-swim, Alkhadli settled for the bronze with Thailand winning the event.
“Mahirap magkaroon ng impression na, ‘Dayaan pala dito, puwedeng manalo sa dayaan.’ I don’t want that to happen. Tama lang na at least ma-correct ‘yung sitwasyon,” said Cojuangco.
