UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas held on to a 7-2 win over University of the Philippines to force a sudden-death match in the UAAP Season 77 women's softball stepladder semifinals on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Learning their lessons from last Sunday's 4-7 loss to UP where they gave up a late three-run lead in a playoff for the No. 2 seeding, the Tigresses protected their four-run cushion to survive a second successive do-or-die match.
The semifinals decider for the right to face fivepeat-seeking Adamson in the finals will be played at 9 a.m. on Sunday, also at the Rizal ballpark.
The win came as fitting follow-up to UST's 4-3 victory over National University in the first stepladder last Wednesday. The Tigresses have now won six of their last seven games after dropping a 0-12 decision to the Lady Falcons last February 21.
With Kris Lacupa, Christine Palma, Cristy Joy Roa and Mary Garde scoring a run each, UST raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening inning. The Tigresses added three more runs in the sixth inning.
Lacupa recorded two runs, three hits and a RBI, while Palma contributed two RBIs and two hits for the Tigresses, who could have finished the match via the mercy rule had it not allowed UP to score a run in the bottom sixth.
