Analin Benjamen strikes out five in seven innings of work for Adamson, Jaime Campos

ADAMSON showed signs of vulnerability but had enough to beat University of the Philippines, 7-4, on Wednesday to capture its 64th consecutive victory in the UAAP Season 78 softball tournament at the Rizal ballpark.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Analie Benjamen pitched a complete game, striking out five and shutting out the Lady Maroons in the first four innings. She gave up four runs and five hits.

The Lady Falcons, which earlier beat University of Santo Tomas, 10-0, are 2-0 for the season but had to endure some anxious moments in the seventh inning.

Benjamen had an errant throw at second base in what was supposed to be a routine double play, leaving two Lady Maroons aboard — Mari Cabriana and Jhenn Alinsod — who eventually scored on a one-out bloop single to right field by DC Cruz.

On the Cruz hit, however, Adamson got a crucial out when Gabin Paz was tagged at third base on a relay throw by the Lady Falcons, breaking UP’s momentum.

Benjamen forced Juliet Omul to ground out to end the game that saw the Lady Falcons leaving 13 runners on base.

“Every game is not easy for us,” said Adamson coach Ana Santiago.

“’Yung mga players, nag-aadapt pa dahil may mga players dati na outfield, ngayon infield na. So ‘yung rotation ng position namin, talagang marami.”

“Hindi nawala ’yung confidence nila sa throwing. Dun nag-stop ’yung momentum,” Santiago said on the crucial second out in the seventh.

Santiago also felt Benjamen lost her focus when she was nearly hit in the head by UP pitcher Cochise Diolata in the fourth inning.

“Medyo nawala sa focus si Benjamen simula nung na-hit-by-pitch. Kakausapin ko siya kasi even ’yung bola niya ngayon, tinatamaan,” said Santiago.

Gelyn Lamata’s triple in the third inning sent Benjamen and Angelie Ursabia home for a 3-0 count. The Lady Falcons’ lead ballooned to 7-0, enough cushion to pull off the victory.
