INCHEON, Korea — The Philippines scored three runs in the fifth inning but the rally fell short and the Blu Girls bowed to Chinese Taipei, 5-4, on Monday in the Asian Games softball competitions.
It was the Philippines’ third loss in four games, although the Blu Girls can still claim a place in the page playoffs and salvage the bronze medal.
Leia Ruiz flied out with two runners on base in the seventh and final frame as the Philippines narrowly lost to the same Taipei squad that routed them in the Softball World Cup earlier this year in Irvine, California.
“We did everything that we could and we fought until the end and until the very last pitch,” said Blu Girls player Dani Gilmore.
Garie Blando scored on a single by Morgan Stuart to put the Philippines ahead at top of the first but Lu Hsueh Mei hit a solo home run to quickly tie the count.
After Li Szu Shih homered in the second, Lu banged an RBI double. Li and Yang Yi Ting also scored on a single by Chen Miao Yi in the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead.
The Blu Girls cut the deficit in the fifth when Elma Parohinog and Blando had back-to-back singles before scoring on a fielding error by a Chinese Taipei left fielder. Dani Gilmore also scored on a Stuart single, 5-4.
The Philippines will now try to clinch the fourth and final spot in the page system semifinal against Thailand on Tuesday and a clash with China, which could finish third after the eliminations, in the battle for the bronze medal.
