THE Philippine team made it back-to-back wins to start the campaign in in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship, following up a win over No. 3 Canada with victory over No. 9 Chinese Taipei on Wednesday in Surrey, British Columbia (Thursday, Manila time).
The Blu Girls moved to the top of Pool B after a 6-2 upset of Canada and an 11-7 victory over Chinese Taipei.
Five runs on six hits at the top of the fifth put the Blu Girls ahead, 7-1, but they yielded five runs off five hits in the bottom of the same frame and allowed game-tying run in the sixth.
They unleashed a strong finishing kick to foil their fancied rivals.
Gabrielle Maurice and Kailee Cuico gave the Philippines a 9-7 cushion with back-to-back RBI doubles then Garie Blando belted a two-run homer to pull away.
Mexico outclassed NJCAA, 2-0, while Australia routed Calahoo Erins, 5-2.
Venezuela defeated Canada Junior, 13-2, while Japan blanked Quebec Rebelles, 13-0.
“The Blu Girls are on a roll, proving that the Philippines can truly excel in softball,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier.
