THE PHILIPPINE Blu Girls softball team plans to train in the US as they prepare for the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) operations manager Jun Veloso said a two-month training in the US is in the works for the Blu Girls, who appear to be shoo-ins for the Asiad contingent.
“There is a plan for training abroad. We are looking at a two-month training in the United States as well as joining the Canada Cup sometime in July,” said Veloso.
The Blu Girls are expected to make it to the Philippine delegation to Incheon especially after chef de mission and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia stated that potential top five finishers in Asia will be given the opportunity to compete in the Asiad.
“Deserving naman ang Blu Girls because in the past stagings of the Asian Softball Championships, fourth tayo lagi and nandito ‘yung mga powerhouse teams na Japan, China, and Chinese Taipei. Based on world rankings, I would say na nasa top 10 tayo in the world,” said Veloso.
The Blu Girls have began training for the Asiad behind the 30-man pool formed by national head coach Ana Santiago.
Meanwhile, Asaphil is also preparing for the Blu Boys’ campaign in this year’s Asian Men’s Softball Championships.
