MANILA had a woeful start in the Big League Softball World Series, dropping its first two matches in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The Manila softbelles, last year’s runner-up, were defeated by Latin America, 2-5, in its first assignment in its doubleheader Friday Manila time before bowing to West Region, 6-9.
Rizza Bernardino slammed a solo home run highlighting a two-run fourth inning to pull the Asia Pacific representatives to within a run, 2-3, but the California-based West Region squad scattered six runs at the top of the fifth inning to set up the rout.
Despite trailing, 2-9, Manila had a gallant stand with four runs at the sixth inning but West’s lead proved too much to overcome.
Host Michigan is currently on top of the standings of the nine-team field with a 2-0 win-loss slate. Also unbeaten are Ontario, Florida and Latin America at 1-0.
Manila finished second last year to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
