TEAM Manila lost to USA Southwest Champion District 5-Louisiana, 8-3, falling short of the finals of the 2015 World Series Girls Big League Softball Championship on Saturday at the Layton Field of the Pyles Center in Lower Sussex County in Delaware (Sunday, Manila time).
Errors doomed the Manila softbelles as they committed eight in seven innings.
The miscues started early, with throwing and catching errors by Shaira Damasing at third base and starting pitcher Mary Ann Antolihao that resulted in a run by Louisiana centerfielder Bobbi Smith.
But the top of the third inning proved to be the backbreaker as Louisiana scored six runs, four unearned.
“We lost to a better team which really played very well today,” said Manila Little League Philippines president Che Borromeo. “The girls tried their best to fight back and we are all very proud of them.”
The Big City softbelles, backed by Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, Philippine Airlines, and International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), will meet last year’s champion District 3 Millsboro–Delaware in the battle for third place.
The host team was upset by USA West Champion Antelope Valley-California, 3-2, in the other semifinal.
“The girls were rattled with errors early in the game and our pitcher was then pressured. We wasted the opportunity but these are all part of the game and the girls tried their best. We will go for the third place finish,” admitted head coach Anna Santiago.
