INTERNATIONAL Little League Association of Manila (Illam) failed to reach the semifinals of the Little League Softball World Series after a 10-9 loss to West Region on Sunday (Monday, Manila time) in Portland, Oregon.
The Illam softbelles failed to hold on to their lead after piling up five runs at the top of the fourth as the West representatives from Hawaii picked up two runs in the bottom fourth to regain the upperhand.
With the loss, Illam wrapped up its campaign in the 11-to-12 bracket with a 1-3 win-loss slate.
West was leading 8-4 when Illam mounted a big fightback to gain a one-run lead after the fourth.
Mayu Nishijima walked with the bases loaded, while Grace Rose Stevens scored home Sabina Bitong for Illam. Then, Mia Laurel put Illam ahead with a three-run double for a 9-8 lead.
Illam hurler Panjie Legaspi, however, gave up a one-out triple to Mahina Piilani, who reached home on a Lena Kotrys groundout to tie the game.
Shannon Pascua-Stanton then singled home Cranci Kamaka for the marginal run, 10-9.
Illam’s elimination wrapped up the country's campaign in world youth baseball and softball this year which was highlighted by Manila's victory in the Big League Softball World Series -- a tournament for players aged 16 to 18.
