THE 2nd Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Shooting Championships-Sen. Chiz Escudero Cup will be held on Friday at the Armscor Shooting Range inside the Makati Cinema Square.
Abac Cordero of the Star made a perfect score of 100 points when he ruled the men's division of the inaugural tournament last year, while Kristel Satumbaga of the Bulletin surprised the field when she ruled the women's division with ease.
But they expect fiercer competition this time from the rest of the PSA membership, composed of sports editors and sportswriters from the country's leading broadsheet newspapers, tabloids and web-based sports news providers.
All PSA members attended a seminar on gun safety conducted by no less than Escudero, an avid sport shooting proponent.
Range officials of Armscor also helped in familiarizing PSA members with different gun calibers before the first tournament and will conduct a refresher course on Friday.
PSA president Rey Bancod, sports editor of Tempo, requires participants to attend the refresher course before they are allowed to compete.
The tournament is also backed by the Philippine Basketball Association, myPhone, and Adidas Action 3 as major sponsors. Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Ritchie Garcia and the Basketball Efficiency and Scientific Training Center (Best Center) of former national coach Nic Jorge are minor sponsors.
