The Philippine team took home a landmark gold in the men's doubles event of the King's Cup Sepak Takraw World Championship.

THE Philippines won a landmark gold medal in the 31st King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championship premier division when they took first place in the men’s doubles event recently in Bangkok.

Rheyjey Ortouste, Jason Huerte, and Mark Joseph Gonzales hurdled Myanmar in come-from-behind fashion, 12-21, 21-17, 21-17 in the championship game to cop the gold medal for the first time in the premier division of the tournament.

The gold came after a stunning win by the Filipinos in the semifinals against Thailand, where they beat the host team, 15-21, 22-20, 21-19, before an animated crowd.

Ortuoste, Huerte, and Gonzales also swept the elimination round with victories over Singapore, Australia, Chinese Taipei, and Indonesia.

The Philippines overcame Myanmar, their same opponent during the doubles event final in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

The Filipino sepak takraw athletes trained for a month in Thailand before plunging into action in the King’s Cup competition.

The Philippines also took a silver in the men’s hoop and bronze in the women’s hoop event of the competition participated in by 35 countries.
